5 Ways to Make Your Home Cozy in the Fall

5 Ways to Make Your Home Cozy in The Fall | The Little Homeplace

In case you didn't know, I am kind of in love with fall. (And by kind of, I mean it's verging on obsession.)

One of my favorite things about living in Idaho is the fact that I get to experience four distinct seasons - namely, FALL.

Just when I'm ready to escape the heat of summer, the nights start to get a little chilly. Harvest begins. The sun sets early and, truth be told, few things can match the beauty of an October evening sky. Now it's sweater weather. And boot weather. And scarf and vest and flannel weather. Rain falls and trees turn. A pot of something delicious simmers on the stove. The farmer works a little later to beat the storms and we split and stack firewood on the weekends.

Sometimes I have to pinch myself because this is actually my life and I can't hardly believe it.

Another thing I love about fall time is creating a feeling of warmth and coziness in our home. I believe a home should be a safe place for all who enter and adding soft, inviting, comfy touches really encourages that kind of atmosphere. That being said, I thought I'd share with you five of my favorite ways to cozy up your home during the fall season so that you can create that same feeling.

1. Blankets
Confession time. Not only am I obsessed with fall, I'm obsessed with blankets. I am a firm believer that one can never have too many blankets. Currently I have nine in my living room alone. My favorite for this time of year are handmade knit or crocheted, or, if you want to go a little more bold, try a faux fur blanket. They store easily in a basket or bin, and you can casually thrown one over the arm of the couch or chair for easy accessibility. You know, in case of an emergency.

2. Candles
Sometimes the house can get a little stuffy when the weather cools down and you need to keep the windows closed. A great way to freshen up any room is to light a candle. Opt for warmer, earthy scents that will match the season. This might go without saying, but really nothing screams fall quite like the smell of pumpkin and warm spices. Great places to get quality candles on the cheap are TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls, or Burlington Coat Factory. Another option would be to make a little potpourri to simmer on the stove. I really like this recipe.

3. Bake
Speaking of wonderful smells, another great way to add them to your home is to bake something yummy! Not only do you get to enjoy the scent of freshly baked bread, or apples and spices, but your tummy gets to enjoy it too. That's what I call a win-win. My go-to is applesauce. You can find my super easy recipe right here. I've also made apple crisp, oatmeal cookies, spiced muffins, honey oat bread, and pumpkin pie. All of which have earned some serious wife points in my husbands opinion. (I would've shared some photos, but... um... we ate it all.)

4. Music
Fall is the best time to listen to a little folk or banjo pickin'. It's also a great touch to add when you have company over as it gently fills any gaps in conversation and makes people feel at ease. Pandora and Spotify are my favorite ways to access a wide variety of tunes. Look up The Barn Owls, or try Sarah Jarosz, Johnny Cash, and The Wailin' Jennys to find the perfect background music for your fall day.

5. Pumpkins / Seasonal Produce
No fall time home would be complete without a few pumpkins, acorns, and maybe some seasonal produce like apples, pears, or squash. I'm a huge fan of decoration with natural, homegrown things. It brings the outdoors in so you can enjoy it, even when the weather is a little bleak. Simply fill up a cute bowl or basket, or add a few pumpkins to a shelf, a windowsill or two, and the front porch. If you're unable to get your hands on real produce, don't be afraid to use the fake stuff! You can buy it once at a local craft store and enjoy it for years to come.
